This independent concept study explores how a Signature Feature can transform the Victoria's Secret store at Utrecht Centraal into a spatial landmark, the one that stops a commuter mid-stride.

The proposal was developed independently by By Vicky Ong Studio and is not affiliated with or commissioned by Victoria's Secret or any related parties.

01 CONCEPTUAL EXPLORATION

Utrecht Centraal, in Netherlands is a modern, high-ceilinged glass and steel environment. It is bright, transient, and visually loud: digital boards, wayfinding, retail signage all compete for the same glance.

In this context, most retail units default to glass frontage with logo placement. They are legible, but not memorable. Victoria's Secret at Utrecht Centraal sits within this same visual field, a brand with exceptional equity, contained within a format that does not yet match its ambition.

We take our design opportunity to transform the building skin itself into the brand's most iconic symbol, and make the store impossible to walk past.

03 THE SIGNATURE FEATURE

We took inspiration from the brand's most enduring symbol — The Angel Wings.

An iridescent, backlit facade of feather-patterned panels, glowing pink-violet against the station's ambient light, visible from fifty metres before a logo, before a window, before a word.

The facade is the feature. The wings inside it are the centrepiece.

04 DESIGN INTENT

“We are the features”

Our intention was to take the emotional resonance of the Angel identity and translate it into architectural expression. We set out to create a retail arrival that feels immersive without being theatrical for its own sake. The entrance becomes a storytelling device. One that holds both the heritage and the future direction of the brand in a single, defining moment.

05 CONCEPT EXPLORATION

We designed the facade as a single unified material system: iridescent leaf and feather-patterned panels that shift from blush to violet depending on viewing angle and ambient light. The steel framing creates depth and structure without weight.

Inside, the neon wing sculpture occupies the full window bay. Suspended, lit from within, it draws the eye from distance and holds it up close.

The entrance remains clean and direct — gold lettering, dark framing, deliberate restraint. The facade earns the attention. The entrance converts it.

Mirror Skin

Iridescent panel facade Dichroic and colour-shifting panels clad the full building exterior. The surface reads differently at every angle and in every light condition, blush at dawn, violet at dusk, pearl-white under station lighting. The facade is not static. It moves with the viewer.

Abstract Wings

Feather-patterned architectural skin The panel motif is drawn from an abstracted feather form, unmistakably referencing the Angel identity.

Gold leadwork traces the outline of each feather cell, holding the iridescent surface within a precise steel and brass framing system. Seen up close, it is craft. Seen from fifty metres, it is a wing.

Interactive Wing Installation

Neon sculptural centerpiece is suspended within the glazed window bay, a neon wing sculpture in pink and white serves as the store's centrepiece. It glows from within. It is visible before the entrance, before the logo, before any product.

Passers-by stop. They photograph it. They walk toward it. The installation does not invite engagement, it demands it.

06 DESIGN ROLE

"We work from one belief, that a single well-conceived element can transform a space from functional to unforgettable."

In a transit environment, dwell time is measured in seconds. The Signature Feature must do its work fast.

07 THE OUTCOME

We designed a store that is not only felt, it creates an entirely different atmosphere within the station.

The feather facade repositions Victoria's Secret Utrecht Centraal from a retail unit into a station landmark, creating the kind of space commuters detour toward, photograph without being prompted, and remember hours after their train has left.

Creating one feature, telling the whole story.
